meditation
continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation
celebration
the festivities engaged in to celebrate something
When speaking of meditation and celebration as a combination we see an automatic duality, as all the word pairs this week are. In studio we have been assigned two projects that deal with this duality. More specifically our light habitat project that can be viewed in the windows across the first year studio area. Our theme for the project was meditation/celebration, In my eyes these two subjects show very specific things. Meditation through light I see as a softer diffused uncontrolled light, and Celebration I see as a brighter directed non-tampered with light. They speak to each other as al dualities do. Meditation is a calmer sense, celebration is a more "in your face" sense.
light
an illuminating agent or source, as the sun, a lamp, or a beacon.
shadow
a dark figure or image cast on the ground or some surface by a body intercepting light.
This was our first project with MDF, i created a light box that played with the duality, light and shadow. Light is created by many things but in any form illuminates. Shadow is its polar opposite in that it is more the absence of light created by objects blocking the path of light. With this project i created cut-outs in a repeating form to have repeating light and shadow in the same shapes. When light is cast through the box the triangles create crossing patterns in the box's interior. When the light source is inside the box each face projects its form of the triangle outward.
