ROAD TRIP

ROOTS
The source or origin of a thing (dictionary.com)
The roots of all design come from the past. Roots are the source. Movements and fads come and go as time progresses but there is always a sense of the past, either by taking inspiration from the past or by going against the past to make something completely new. As shown in Thomas Jefferson’s home we see strong Greek influence in the dome and columns, while we also see new innovation in the many experimental elements Jefferson put in his home.

CONGRUENTS
Agreement, harmony, conformity, or correspondence (dictionary.com)
In design all things require congruency to make sense. This assists in the delight portion of commodity firmness and delight. As seen in the drawing this interior took this into account when he incorporated a continuous line design from the walls, onto the floors,
and in the railings.

CONCEPT
An idea of something formed by mentally combining all its characteristics or particulars; a construct. (Dictionary.com)
In history we are doing a precedent analysis to help us apply our knowledge gained from the class into the real world. While doing so we are asked to guess as to what we think the concept of the building is. This means, what is the purpose of this building? What was the designer’s driving factor in the design? My building is the Hearst Tower in Charlotte, NC. In this building I believe the designer was try to make a unique break from the hustle and bustle of the banking center and create a social center. The Hearst Tower is a breath of
fresh air in a city full of plain facades.

MATERIALITY
Material nature or quality (dictionary.com)
In studio we have been making projects out of MDF, but we are making our models out of cardboard. We must consider the materiality of the MDF when making our cardboard models because it is a lot easier to manipulate cardboard then it is to manipulate MDF.

COMPRESSION/RELEASE
Compression - the process or result of becoming smaller or pressed together
Release - to free from confinement, bondage, obligation, pain, etc.; let go (dictionary.com)
