Portal Critique Reflection
As a culmination of our work from the semester thus far 1st year studio created portals around the doorways of the 1st floor offices. I would first off like to commend every one that deserves it on the great time and dedication they put into this project. All of the doorways turned out great!
My group consisted of Greg Hickman, Kelsey Rhode, and I. We created a portal from the inspiration of our design words, our circulation zones, and our assigned building, the Pantheon. We took the words balance, proximity, and hierarchy and built up a cardboard curl portal. At the bottom there are less curls and toward the top center they become larger in size and denser in number. This creates visual hierarchy with the most attention being drawn to the top center of the portal. Balance is created by having a visually equal amount of curls to each side of the largest center curl. Proximity is in the project with its relation in space to the other doors as well as the curls relation to each other and our specific door. We could have better incorporated the pantheon into our project but we found that by using light opposite of the way the Pantheon does we still had relation to it.
Looking back at the critique of our project I find many points on which my group could have expanded and done better. Our PowerPoint was fluid in that we followed the words from our handouts throughout the year but our idea to kind of go Quinton Tarentino through the project by starting and the end and going backwards through wasn’t as successful as we had have hoped.
Overall I am very pleased with my group and the work we produced. We learned a lot from this project and can carry that knowledge into our future endeavors within IARC.
