Precedent Analysis - Justification

The Hearst Tower
214 N. Tyron Street Charlotte, NC
Construction 1999-2002
Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

The 47-floor skyscraper in our very own Queen City known as, The Hearst Tower, perked my interest for our precedent analysis project not only because it is the second tallest building in Charlotte, but because of the buildings reverse floorplate design. This means that the top floors are larger than the ones closer to the bottom. On average the upper floors are about 4,000 square feet larger than the average 20,000 foot lower floors. This building exemplifies great examples of craft, architecture, design, and planning. The Hearst Tower is a beautiful, interesting, and highly functional piece of architecture that stands in the heart of downtown Charlotte.
